Seventeen

Lucas awoke in the hospital.

Joe sat in the chair beside the bed and smiled. “Good morning, bro.”

“What happened?” He replied, rubbing his eyes. “Heart attack?”

“The doctor said that you suffered an angina. Not a heart attack, but it’s a warning that unless you slow down and lower your stress, you may have one eventually.”

“No shit?”

Joe shook his head. “No shit.”

“Damn.”

“Doctor says that you should be able to leave later today.”

Lucas sat up and swung his feet over the side of the bed. “No, I need to go now. We have to find Lydia.”

“Easy, bro,” Joe said, putting a hand on Luke’s shoulder. “This is exactly what put you in here.”

Lucas sighed. “I know, but what the hell am I supposed to do? I can’t live without her. If we wait too long, we’ll never find her. There’s no telling what they will do with her.”

“We’ll find her. You have my word.”

“What did your brothers find out about the Desert Labs?”

“They reviewed the tapes. Lydia was there, and they used a tranquilizer dart to kidnap her.”

Lucas closed his eyes and shook his head slowly. “What else? Did you see who the person was?”

“No, but we did find something of peculiar interest.”

“What?”

“There is a room filled with rows of incubation chambers, like you mentioned that Lydia came from. Her name is stamped on one of them.”

“I hope you busted them all to hell.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Joe smiled. “Think about it, Luke. They wanted her there. By leaving everything intact, it’s likely they will bring her back once things have cooled off.”

“That’s possible, I suppose.”

“They have invested too much time and money in the facility to simply abandon it. I estimate they spent millions of dollars building it over the past three years. They won’t rebuild. They might have plenty of money, but they don’t have that kind of time.”

“But if they know we’ve found their lab, they won’t risk using the place.”

“Even if they noticed our arrival, they won’t have a way of knowing it was us.”

Lucas frowned.

Joe shrugged. “We took all the surveillance tapes and replaced them with blank ones.”

“I don’t know what I’d do without you,” Lucas said with a broad smile.

“What are blood brothers for?”

“I owe you greatly.”

Joe shook his head. “Finding Lydia alive and in good health is reward enough.”

“Thanks.”

“Never a problem.”

A doctor dressed in white and carrying a clipboard entered the room and stopped at the foot of Lucas’ bed.

“How are you feeling, Mr. Ridale?”

“I feel fine. I have no pain.”

“Glad to hear that.”

Lucas gave a sly grin. “So when can I leave?”

“Not yet. We have a few more tests we need to run to make certain that you’re okay. Although you didn’t have a heart attack, the symptoms of angina are generally a warning sign. It’s best we examine you a bit longer to be on the safe side.”

“I feel fine.”

“It shouldn’t take long. Two more hours at the most.”

Joe nodded. “Kick your feet back and relax.”

“I really can’t.”

“Be patient,” the doctor said. “I’ll send a nurse in.”

“Luke, if we have to travel fast, it’s best we know that you’re healthy enough to go.
